I think that is meant to be "positive" rather than negative. It lets the band know that they should strive to be more "versitale" in their music.
This has been said of many artists over the last 50 years. Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry were two of the "Early R&R stars" that this was said about. Early BeachBoys, BEATLES and Creedence Clearwater were also "slammed" for the "repetitional sounds" of their early recordings.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers are in GREAT company!!

having a specific "sound" is one thing. A bands style is unique. But sometimes (a lot of times) bands will just speed up or slow down the tempo and change the key the melody is in and call it a new song. That's when i start to critisize.
It's like twinkle twinkle little star and the alphabet song. Same melody...different words. Same song? Or Hot Cross Buns and Three Blind Mice. Everything is the same except the key and lyrics.
When you "make" music, people expect new music. Not the same melody/song with a "twist". I think Pop bands are guilty of this the most.

I agree completely. It's when OTHER bands try to sound the same that you should criticize anyone. But then where would we be without bands copying sound? We wouldn't have as much music. Pearl Jam and Audioslave rock and it's the fact that the songs sound similar that I love them.

I really dont understand it either. Do they expect a band to have all different genre on one cd? Seriously, when a singer has a unique voice, every song is going to sound they same. If you like the band or singer, you like the cd, even if it does "sound the same"

I think the point is that if they are truly artists their songs will have definite characteristics unique to the song, rather than simply sounding like all the others that group has done. You know, it is easy to make a song with three or four chords. How difficult isit to make one with three or four chords that actually sounds different from all the other three-or-four chord songs out there?

I don't like Nickel Back for that reason, but it sounds like they don't work hard on their music. But I like the Red Hot Chili Peppers...

Not all bands have their own unique sound. You do have your copycats out there, however there are a lot of bands that are unique and don't sound like anyone else.

It means they have no imagination and thats all they come up with. I hate when songs sound the same. There are so many possibilities and people just dont explore them.
