It seems like you're pushing yourself too far too fast. I don't think popping is necessarily a horrible sign (my body used to kinda shift and grind a little while I was stretching before doing the splits even though I did it every day), but take it easy and slow. Run a couple small laps before you stretch to warm up your body and do a lot of stretches before you attempt to do the splits. Only go down as far as you can, and hold it for a a while. Try to go down a tiny bit farther every day. Eventually you'll get it, but don't kill yourself trying to do it right away.

If you're just starting to do splits, stop attempting to do one if your legs start hurting. That's a warning that your body is not used to stretching that far. You could go to a local gymnastics training place and ask one of the coaches there about this, if it's allowed.

Anytime something pops it's bad news. Do you warm up before trying the split? Don't do anything that hurts. "No pain no gain" is a bunch of bullspit.

That's not true..sounds like your friend is trying to get you to seriously hurt yourself...your legs are hurting because you are over stretching your muscles....keep practicing and you'll be able to do it without pain.
