I love them both but I have to go with Deerhunter,I mean DeNiro,Meryl Streep,ChristopherWalken!!Also it showed the effect of the war on a whole group of friends from a small town,it wasn;t just about what actually happened in Vietnam but how it continued to effect their lives afterwards.

Deer Hunter

It was a little slower, but a lot more in depth about the characters involved. And a lot more about before during and after the war. It was overall coverage.

FMJ was just boot camp and some war footage. No character development about who and where the soldiers came from. What they left behind, and what they came back to. It was a cool movie, but not a very good one.

Besides Deer Hunter had Christopher Walken. You can't top that.

The very best movie about Nam is "Apocalypse Now" —
but "Deer Hunter" and "Full Metal Jacket" are also very
good war-movies about Viet Nam ... It is hard to tell
which one is best. I like them both — Sorry.

"Deer Hunter" start with a prologue in America ...
and the Kubrick-film also starts with a prologue... but this one
has more humor in it. The nicknames of the soldiers ("ladies")

... and Vincent D'Onofrio as the thumb-sucking boy
with his trousers down!

Tough to say.

Each seems to capture something that says someone talked in depth with an ex grunt who'd really been in the bush.

We who have never been in actual armed combat, especially hard core, terrible fighting like that; can still get a feel of what it might've been like if we honestly empathize and search.

( ' Everything We Had ' - Al Santoli )

FMJ Shows the sheer madness.
Deer Hunter shows the internal storm. Neat trick in a visual medium. Specially when DeNiros' character comes back still in class ' A's ' - we feel like him when he says : " I feel far away. " So do we.

Apocalypse Now shows a solid picture of the utter chaos and confusion of war. Inadvertently!! So there's really no one film that does it. Platoon comes close to giving you a tempered, overall view.

What is positive about these films is they dont' glorify it.

Look at a photo of this guy. Take a long look at that mug. He LOOKS like he'd " been to hell and back. " He should be able to talk.

DEER HUNTER the russian roulette scene is as intense as it gets. Robert Deniro still cared about his career and the gooks all get killed as it should be.
