I am answering this question because it illustrates what I think is a big problem in the medical field today.
PMS is an extremely serious medical condition. I am very serious; but, for some reason, ppl laugh at it or make a joke of it. Most of my life, I have experienced such severe PMS that I would sometimes even begin to feel suicidal during those 5 days. I have actually been fired from 2 jobs in my life due to PMS because the depression during that period would get so severe that I would stay out of work... actually unable to get out of the bed.
After that happen, I was feeling doomed because what does a woman do? I mean think about it.. you get a job and say, 'oh btw, once a month I am going to fall apart, become severely depressed, and maybe not be here?' See.
Btw, these were not joke jobs. I have two BS degrees... one in Comp. Sci and one in EE.
Anyways, I had continually been telling my obgyn and my normal doctor how severe my PMS was for years. Neither of them ever seemed to take it serious. Like I said, society seems to think it is a joke or something. It is a serious life influencing medical condition that needs a lot of research to be done.
PMS literally destroyed my ability to work a normal job. After 6 years of getting two wonderful degrees, I now am self-employed and partially retired. That was the only way that I could survive with this condition by being able to determine my own schedule.
So, seriously, I hope you read this and think twice about being so light on the matter. It is very serious and life influencing for a lot of women.

Put myself in a MAN'S shoes?
Yeah, try it the other way around dude. You try bleeding like a damn slaughtered pig for 5 days (most periods last between 3 and 7 days) every month. You try being bloated for a week or two every month. You try having cramps so bad that you can only curl up into the fetal position on the floor...every month.
Yeah, while we're at it, you try pushing a cantaloupe out a hole the size of a lemon...and then you bleed for a month or more! You deal with breasts that swell and engorge with milk and become so painful that you want to lop off anyone's hand that tries to touch them. You deal with having stitches in your genital area. You deal with yeast infections. Messy creams. Mood swings.
Bite me.
All that said, yes PMS is real. Don't hold a gun to a premenstrual woman. Stupid idea. I don't even pay attention to my cycle anymore, I just notice it AFTER the fact that I've been bitchy all week long that I'm due to start my period in the next few days. Since I'm on birth control pills, I know exactly when my period is due to start...but I always notice after.
That's like telling someone who's depressed to just snap out of it. It's called hormonal IMBALANCE for a reason.

PMS is real so let's not debate the gun to the head scenario which is ridiculous at best. PMS is a chemical and biological reaction within the body prior to the start of menstruation. No, women are not making it up, no more than men are making up being dunderheads and asking stupid questions.

Hello, it is real. This is how it happens. When we are feeling are normal happy selves we have oestrogen and progesterone flying about our bodies making us feel good. These hormones also maintain the lining of our uterus. A few days before our period, these hormones fall to almost undetectable levels...causing the lining of our uterus to die and bleed and we go mental because these hormones have disappeared. What happens to someone when they have a nicotine habit and cannot get a cigarette? It's the same thing. Irritable, tearful and angry. It's a withdrawal reaction.
