This requires one of those "you are what you eat" answers.
People form opinions about you based on your own self-image, your behavior, and your attitude toward them.
Have you ever noticed that people who have a positive outlook toward life have friends that share the same perspective.
Whereas, people who seem to hate everything tend to hang around with others who hate everything, including themselves.
To be blunt, people's reactions toward you are a reflection of your attitude toward yourself.

Because they are fake to begin with. They are putting their best foot forward and then they just start to relax and let you see the real person. We aren't all like that, I promise.

because they can only keep up the act for so long -- there may even be a few who sincerely want to change, but down deep, they're assholes; I think it's a genetic thing....

Either you are a ******** or you are just getting to know the wrong people. Even though, I would agree that people are ******** I've found that it's not always just their fault.
