x = apple juice
y = salads
Place the two on top and subtract from one another as seen below:
4x+5y=$10.30
5x+4y=$9.50
_-_________________
-x + y=$.08
Add the x over to the other side
y=$.08 + x
Now plug this into the equation:
5x+4(.08+x)=$9.5
5x+$.32+4X=$9.5
9x=$9.18
x=1.02
now if y=$.08+x then
y=$1.1
So one of each on totals to $2.12

observations....
1. Question did not state what type of specific juice in the final sentence.
2. Further analysis will tells you that you can't count and sell salad on its own, but you can only count and sell salad per plate. Restaurants don't sell one salad, or four salad.

okay J = Juice and S = Salad...
5 J + 4 S = 950
4 J + 5 S = 1030
9 J + 9 s = 1980
J+s = 220
Therefore the cost of one of each = $2.20.
Now... if we need to know EACH... we solve the first set for J in terms of s.

subsitute or eliminate one of the variables. once you solve for one variable, plug it into one of the equations above and solve for the other.
