The don't start floating immediately, it takes a short time for the body gases to build up in the body and bring it to the surfact. It's sort of like air in a baloon and the body will swell up which gives it more bouyancy than when the body is still alive.

This is why, in some of the landings on the islands during World War 2, one of the great sports was to shoot the floating bodies and watch them explode.

B/c they are freaking out and moving. Instead of pushing themselves up to the top, struggling actually pulls them under.
They need to learn to relax.
Fat floats.

(That's why swimmers have to worry about their Body Fat. They want to be somewhat muscular so they sink some. They don't want to be too skinny or they'll do nothing but sink. Bone sinks. Fat Floats.)

Have fun.

PS the other people are right too. If you have a skinny guy that dies, it's going to take him awhile to float. At that point he would float due to gas.

Also, the higher the salt content of the water, the sooner the person will float.

the floating of a dead body is caused by the body decomposing and producing gases as a result. This gas inside the body causes the body to become more bouyant and thus will float to the top.

They don't float immediately. After death the body immediately starts to decompose and gases form in the body which makes it float.

When a person dies, he/she automatically releases some gases, which allows him/her to rise to the surface. As he/she bleeds out and waste leaves the body, his/her density decreases. The water then has more density than the person, allowing him/her to float.

You either float face down or face up, people fight to keep themselves in an upright position for some reason (habit i suppose) so long as your face upright (!) you shouldn't need to struggle much

You watch too many movies. Bodies don't immediatley start floating when someone dies. By the time they are floaters they are bloated.

that is why if you are calm and breath normally you will stay afloat. People who are drowning take short breaths which makes them negative buoyancy. Breathing normally makes you positive buoyancy. try it in a pool it works .
