The BEST way to keep fresh cut flowers longer is to do this three step method. 1. Cut the flower stems at an angle and place into rapidly boiling water for 45 seconds. DO NOT allow stem to touch the bottom of the pan. Hold in the water just below the water line. This will push the air up thru the stem and out the flower. 2. Immediately place the stems into a bowl of ICE water. This will shock the flower stem and cause it to seal preventing anymore air from getting into the stem and causing it to wilt. 3. Place flowers in a vase that is 3/4 of the stem length full of cold tap water. You can also lightly spray starch or hairspray over the petals to keep them firm.

Asprin and Sugar both work well.
Be sure also to use non filtered water. I have heard of a lot of people putting fresh flowers in Filtered water due to everything thats in it. The minerals that are in it befor the filtering process are actually very good for the flowers.

I've heard of 'Asprin', and also the bleach as that keeps your vase clean as well. My contribution is to put the flowers in fizzy lemonade ( the cheapest rubbish!)

The flower extenders that the florist gives in little packets works pretty well. However, if you don't have that, then I've read that plain uncoated aspirin works pretty good.

A few drops of bleach to kill bacteria and an aspirin. I don't know what the aspirin does but nurseries recommend it.
