I've wondered that myself. I remember hearing that they are shutting down. Some of those look downright scary to me.

I believe that it means that that person has risen his or her stature enough to have a wax model of them made. It signifies recognition and honours them as a role model. It is special because not just anyone can have a wax model of themselves made. It is considered as a monument of that person.

I suppose its just an incredible ego boost that they are so popular as to have wax statues created of them for the general public to view. I would imagine though that it is incredibly humiliating though when its announced that they are to be melted down!
