Yep. The 3,000,000 over 20 acres is the figure I've seen most often. Some like Illiamna, Becharof and Tustamena are really impressive.
But many, many of them on the North Slope are lakes only by virtue of being a few feet deep. And the "land" around them is squoosey tundra that your boots can sink to water in.
Flying over a few hundred miles of that country and the 3,000,000 figure starts to make sense. Or even to be quite low if you notice how many little 100', 200' and 500' glacial potholes there are. (20 acres is over 1000' in diameter).
So, it certainly beats the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" by a lot.
Off to paddle/portage through 14 of them on Saturday,
