I don't think it's so much that they actually suck, but it might be that many people are starting to dislike them becaue they feel (and this might be true) that they have become too commercial, especially with the release of American idiot. Lots of people think that they've "sold out" and are no longer punk.

The people who think that this just happened with American Idiot obviosuly don't know a whole lot about the band, as they first initially "sold out" by signing to a major label and releasing Dookie in 1994. They left the underground punk scene to get big. Some people might argue that they were trying (and succeeded) to just get their music heard by a wider audience and spread their "message". But most others would say they sold out and left the underground punk scene for fame. They were shunned from 924 Gilman, the place they first started in punk music.

But for those who became fans between Dookie and before American Idiot, they would probably consider Green Day's sell-out point to be with the release of American Idiot. The album was very different from their normal style, or the punk style in general, but with that the band gained a whole new audience with its release. They became even more popular than in the days of Dookie, which actually upset many long-time fans.

People think Green Day suck because they hate seeing all these poser 6th grader fans who only listen to American Idiot and will refuse to listen to any of their other songs or albums, and who think Billie Joe (and the rest of the band) is "sooooo effin hawtttt!!!!!!!!!!111!11!!!11!!!", and crap like that. Green Day has gradually over the years taken on a more poppy sound, most noticably with 1997's Nimrod. The band's true fans hate seeing them getting more poppy and radio-friendly. Some would consider their sell-out more to do with money and fame. Some think it's with their image, what with Billie Joe's eyeliner and skinny ties. Others see it with changing their music and more or less leaving their roots behind. I guess it's really just a matter of opinion.

I am now open for hate mail. And damn, I used quotes a lot.

Green day does not 'suck', as you say. They are accomplished musicians with an incredibly large fan base. Green Day has more albums out, and all of these are great, than any five Hip Hop or cRap artist(?) out there. Green day has grown and matured into one of the most respected bands in punk or rock history with many of the new bands today citing Green Day as major influences for their music. The lyrics in nearly every Green Day song are well written and very clever. And they spell thier words correctly, too. Does is spelled Does, not Dose.

I'm not 100% sure why they suck but it could be the rythmn of the songs that they have been producing lately because they kind of sound the same almost in every song. I understand they are a punk band or trying to be a punk band but to establish this you play three chords but the same in every ****** sound. I mean if the Ramones, Sex Pistols, and the Clash played the same three chords or same rythmn in each song I would start to hate them too. I don't think there that bad but they could use some work on using different chords, style, or rythmn in producing the message or song that they are creating. I hope this helps yeah.

Green Day don't suck. They never did!
They are even more famous now than they were back in the 90's.
In the last 2 years they won more awards than any other rock band!!!

well, back in the 90's, during the whole punk revival, alot of people thought that was as punk as you could get.

Personally, I think, at least now, they're an example of what happens when punk ages...they don't suck, but they have evolved.
