I've read every Sherlock Holmes novel and short story and some of the stories that were written by authors other than Arthur Conan Doyle. My favorites are A Scandal in Bohemia; The Final Problem and Silver Blaze. What are yours and why do you like Sherlock Holmes stories?

Johnslat: Thanks for the suggestion! I'll do that.
Memphisroom: Yes, that always puzzled me, too! Curious, isn't it?

I've read them all several times over. It's hard to pick a favorite, but I do like Silver Blaze, The Red-Headed League, the Musgrave Ritual, and The Copper Beeches. Every time I see a tree and wonder how tall it is, I think of the calculations the character made in the Musgrave Ritual. I like them because they're a good exercise in logic and observation, and because I really like Holmes and Watson as characters. Even Mycroft could grow on you. My maiden name was Battershell, and my family originally came from Dartmoor, so I used to joke that it was really The Hound of the Battershells.

I really love Silver Blaze, the Man with the Twisted Lip, The Bruce Partington Plans and the Abbey Grange. Of the novels, I love love love The Hounds of the Baskervilles. Every Christmas I make sure to read The Blue Carbuncle, and watch the television adaptation of it. I am currently in the process of collecting all the Granada Television episodes of Sherlock Holmes on DVD. Jeremy Brett's interpretation of Holmes is brilliant brilliant brilliant!
As for pastiches, I liked Caleb Carr's The Italian Secretary and Michael Didbin's The Last Sherlock Holmes Story.
The thing that puzzles me, though, is how the writer who created such a logical character as Holmes could be duped into believing in fairy photographs and the occult.

I can also claim to have read all the Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and any others written by other authors. My Favorites? That's a tough question - they're all so darn good. But here's a stab at it:
"A Scandal in Bohemia," "The Red-headed League," "The Adventure of the Speckled Band," "The Adventure of the Engineer’s Thumb," "The Final Problem," and "The Adventure of the Empty House."
Why do I like them? The primary reason, of course, is the character of Holmes himself, a brilliant intellect whose keen powers of observation make his deductions, so seemingly inexplicable at first, seem so logical, once explained.
But may I make a suggestion? If you haven't already read the "Father Brown" mysteries by G.K. Chesterton, please give them a try as well. Father Brown relies more on psychology to unravel his mysteries, but believe me, they're as engrossing as the Holmes stories,

Hey there! I'm SO obbsessed with Sherlock Holmes. It's great to know that there are other people out there too, because I'm the only one at my school who really likes him. I've read nearly all of the stories, but our public library is awful, so I think I might be missing a few.
I like The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton, because Holmes is willing to break into his house to get the papers.
The Blue Carbuncle is one of my favorites, because it's just a random mystery.
And the one that I forget what it's called. . .a guy and his son are the murderers, and there's a scrap of parper with writing on it. . .the part where Holmes knocks over the table and blames it on Watson cracks me up.
I HATE a Scandel in Bohemia. I think that Irene Adler cheated in sort of a way, because she knew what Holmes was after and all that. She didn't really beat him.

I read all of the original Sherlock Holmes books and stories when I quite a bit younger. I think it is time to read them again! My daughter has become interested in the old time movies and radio shows. She loves the Sherlock Holmes radio shows. Nigel Bruce even stars in some of them as Dr. Watson. You can purchase these but many are also available from your local library. If they don't have it they should be able to order it for you.
