Ask your college what they recommend...often they have a program to buy the laptop and steeply discounted prices through them....take them up on that offer as it also often includes support

Dell is just another PC brand, running the Windows Operating System which you are already accustom to. Apple, until recently, ran only on their own operating system. This means that you would need to learn a completely new computer system.
Unless you are going into the computer graphics field, I would suggest sticking with a standard PC (dell, toshiba, etc)....Computer graphics is very heavy with Apple, but almost everything else is your standard PC.
Some schools even have requirements as to what systems they will support. Also, check to see if your school has an agreement with any of the companies that will give you a discount.....

I am happy with my Apple computer. Also, if you purchase right now as a college student, Apple is sweetening the deal a bit not only with a college student discount, but with a free iPod nano (1 GB, I think).
With PC-based, you have to look out for a whole slew of viruses, etc. The fewer users for Apple/Mac OS lends to the fact that there aren't as many viruses for Mac.
There's also Apple Bootcamp out there, that allows you to have Windows on your computer as well as Mac, provided you have a dual core processor.
There are lots of freeware out there, so you can also save money on word processing applications, some games, and other utilities.

No way. Stay with a PC.
Macs suck so bad, it's not even funny.
I had to use them once, in a lab. For 4 months. It was the most trying experience of my entire life.
I thank my current PI everyday (ok, not EVERY day) for using PCs in the lab, over Macs...
And if you think about getting an Apple notebook, they tend to get so hot to cook your cojones. Literally. When it comes to notebooks, nothing beats a Sony VAIO.
Quite frankly, Apple should stay in the music business.

Dell is better. Apples are more expensive and less software-compatible than Dells. My dell computer has been very reliable, too.

if you'll be doing video editing or you're going to a hippy school (CU) where you'll be made fun for not having an apple, go for it. If you'll be in some sort of math/science/engineering program stay away from apple. Otherwise, your choice.

Check with the college you will attend before making this decision. Some schools have particular requirements for the computer you bring, based on their network setup.
