Great question, but not easy to find an answer. Your first stop might be the library if you live in a small town...but that probably wouldn't be too revealing unless you knew the previous owners names. It should be a matter of public record on who lived in what houses, you before the library, stop by the county clerks office, they could help you with the names, then go to the library and look up old obituaries in the papers, you probably would need to use the microfiche machines. Then you would have to find the living relatives and interview them over the phone.
If it was a murder or suicide, and the likely reason the spirit is still there, the police might be able to help you, but they are pretty busy, and I don't think they would take the time for something like that.

I had a dark figure come through the bathroom door that leads to my bedroom one night while reading before going to sleep. These are known as Shadow People. Did your show up in color? Do you remember the type style of dress it was wearing? Long time ago clothes, or more recent? Doing the research on deaths in the home is difficult. Check with the previous owner if you can. The City in which you live has a record at the City Offices that has records of past owners. Then you need to find out when they died, should also be recorded in the city records. When you go, plan on staying for hours. Was this spirit a woman, man or child. Or could you tell at all? It could be that someone you know has just passed over and wanted to see you one last time. So it may not be the house at all. My "Shadow Person", walked through the door of the bathroom, into my bedroom, walked up to the foot of my bed, turned and walked out through my closet. Never seen him/her again. All I saw was a dark shadow figure, no details at all. But research through the City Planning Department, try and find out if your house was placed on land that could have been a hospital, or someone who was a past owner who's family member died at home. What did your spirit do? Just a walk through? Can you describe him/her You can always reach me through this service if you want more help. But I'd say go to the City Office nearby that has records of past owners and start there. In this heat, probably looking for ice! Ha Ha, feel free to contact me ok?

You can go to the court house and find all the people who have previously owned the house and find out there also i think if someone has died in the house.
It may not be a spirit from that house. Spirits follow people they like from house to house.. town to town. even city to city..
know what i am saying..
they like you..
It was apparently a good spirit because you are here to talk about it.. not a harmful one..
I wouldn't worry a whole lot about it.. I have had them talk to me. I have had some that threw my pots and pans out of my cubboards at night.
I have had them tug on my shirt or just stand there and look at you.. I have had them talk to me.. so spirits are just lonely and are waiting to pass on to the other side.
court house best place to find out who has died in the home.

Make a visit to your local library and do some research on the house and it's history.

If someone has died in the house, it has to be disclosed to the buyer. Ask the previous or current owner of the house.

Ask the talking unicorn in your backyard or the tooth fairy. They are as real as the spirit you were visited by.

ask your neighbors about the history of the house and your broker and if you are not satisfied and still want to go for it you can call a paranormal expert or buy a "ouija" board and do it by yourself.
