..when we broke up. I have a signed paper. But now she wants to take her places. I've been holding on to the fact that possession is 9/10ths of the law.....Can she take my dog now?
What should I do to ensure she doesn't steal her from me?

I didn't steal her....she was her dog..prior to us living together for 2 years...then when she left me...she gave me the dog..because she couldn't afford it....now that she's missing her life with me...she's trying to remain tied...through the dog.

The dog is yours - it was a gift. She can not repossess it. I would recommend getting your dog microchipped with the paperwork stating that you are the owner. It is not that expensive and you have "official" paperwork and if she does steal her then you have a way of proving it is your dog and will be able to locate her using the microchip (it's like a lo-jack for dogs)

If she gave you the dog, it was a gift and is yours to keep. If she tries to 'steal' the dog, take her to court for custody of the dog - you can do that. But why not try to work something out with your ex-girlfriend? It sounds like you both love the dog very much and a dog can never get too much love, set up a schedule where you can share the dog - treat the situation like you would if it was a child you were "fighting" over.

If this paper states that she left the dog to you then you have sole custody of the dog. It is up to you to decide if and when she can see the dog. Go to the local animal authority and have the dog registered in your name.
If you decide to let her borrow the dog then get it in writing because she may not bring it back. Maybe you can work out a joint custody schedule.
Despite what you wrote, if you actually stole the dog from her then give it back. Don't abuse the dog. Let the person who loves the dog more keep it.
Poor dog. Good thing you two don't have children.

You can't ensure that she won't steal the dog. Write up a visitation agreement for the dog and NEVER have children with this woman.

If you have signed papers stating that this is your dog, then you have every right to take her to small claims court. But first before you do that, talk to her about maybe sharing the dog (i.e. visitation rights).
However, she could skip town and take the dog with her...that's another story...that's dog-napping. So taking her to court is probably your best bet.

Yup...this was God's merciful way of saying, you guys weren't ready for marriage.
By all legalities, no she can't take your dog. But there's nothing stipifying that she will be held under legal ramifications if she does. She not only misses you, she still misses the companionship of her dog.
If you're willing to spend money on this issue, get it in writing and have it noterized. It may or may not help. But be aware giving in to her wants of "doggy visits" may get out of control.
Peace Out
