We have a beautiful tree in the front yard that was recently hit by a lighting bolt. It knocked a lot of the bark off one side and dug about an 1 in into the tree itself. Can anyone tell us what we should put on the open area that has been damaged that may help save our tree. The damage is about 12in across and about 5 feet long.
Thanks

Thunder bolt normally comes with red hot lightining. Few trees survive the heat. To assist any surviving tree to recover, one of the things u do is to cut green grasses & build it on the ground around the tree. this help retain 24 hrs moisture & cool temprature which the tree need at the time. These grasses also would in time decay to become manure to the tree. The bark is going to grow back by forming thick mould of flesh around the hard wound(wood).

When lightning goes thru a tree, it literally cooks the wood... that portion of the tree is most likely damaged permanently. But if you want to prevent the damaged area from losing moisture, you can apply pitch, tar, or a 'plant' sealer, that is used on trees where limbs have been cut off. You can find this product at any nursery, or store that sells nursery supplies.

Good Luck!
