hi,

you didnot give enough data...
supposing your operating system is windows (obviously)
okay here goes....

is your computer connected to a network? if so others are accessing your hard disk.. since you are on a shared network!

is your computer a home PC with many user accounts?
then before shutting down Press "windows button+L" then you can see the number of people logged on!

Is your computer a Standalone Home PC?
then you have switched users and forgot to logoff while switching back!!

if you seriously doubt that someone else is insideyour Pc maybe tru wireless connectivity... then Press CTRL + ALT +DEL then click Users tab.. you should be able to see who all are loged on, send message or if you are an administrator... even log him off!!

start > run > type " controll userpassword2 " without quotes.

it will bring up a window.
click users tab. then check (tick) the box that says "users must enter a password to access this system" click okay. restart your pc.

To continue with mystictmoose: I also get that message if I try to shut down after my computer goes to screensaver mode.
In other words -
Let's say I was logged in and wandered away from my computer. My screensaver pops up. I come back later and the computer will be showing the User Select screen instead of my desktop. Instead of re-entering my desktop I decide to shut down from the User Select screen. I will get that message because I didn't select "Log Out" from my desktop.

This is because you are using Windows XP, and you have more than one desktop profile. Not all of these profiles are logged off when you go to shut down. This happens usually when you switch users and forget to switch back.

Assuming u are on windows on a shared network, there are many possibilities:
1. You have switched users, without logging out.
2. You have shared some resources from your PC, which other users are using on the network. ( Folders, printers etc)
3. MAny viruses/malwares on other PC's try to access various ports on ur PC for spreading. This also causes this message.

If ur PC is adequately protected, and haven't shared anything for your collegues, it is best to ignore this message.

I get it frequently on my office PC

Maybe your PC has become a bot. You might have downloaded a file that is letting others control/use your computer.
Adware
Spyware
VIRUSES !!

get a MAC !

you might just have some programs running that are hidden. at the bottom right side of your screen there should be an arrow. click it and it'll show you the programs that are running
