Why is it that you can't help some people? What would you do with this person?

Give her the boot. It's been a year almost. We are just enabling people to live off the government. Did these people have jobs before Katrina, or were they on welfare? Find a job in that same field in another place. If you lost everything, what is there to go back to. It's time to move on before there's nothing left for victims of this years current hurricanes and storms. Are the people in St. Louis getting help? I haven't heard.

Sorry if I'm brutal, but Good Lord! It's time to pull yourself up by your bootstraps and move on people!

I would help her get set up with the local SRS office -- signed up for child support, housing assistance, food vouchers, child care assistance, and give her 3 months to move on. I know she has outstayed her welcome, but how is she now supposed to scrape up enough for first/last month's rent, utilities, food, and everything else with 3 children to take care of and only a month to do it in? She can go check into a shelter if necessary.

There are just some people who revel in their misery. The worst thing you can do is to join them in their revelry. The best thing to do is to demonstrate proper behavior. If they see their behavior is not controlling you, they will change. Until then, they do not really want your help, just your joining them in their pity party.

Usually I treat them kindly, but ignore the bad stuff. When they see they can't control my reactions with their behavior, they either move on to someone else who "can't help them," or they quit acting as if they are going at life alone and listen to me.

It's because they don't want to be helped. So, I just don't help them. It's THEIR problem.
