When you get married and change your name with Social Security, it is a good idea to change it on everything for your own sake - but through social security, creditors will know that you "are known" under both of these names, so it is not so important to make a big deal about it.

I did not change my last name. I never told Social Security to change it, but because we file taxes jointly they know that we are married, they have me down as "also known as" me + married name - which i don't use on anything.

I guess what I am saying is that the only thing that is important is that you change it with social security if that is important to you - everything else will kind of take care of itself. I mean, when your driver's license expires you can change it then, rather than the extra effort to do that right now (though I would say your credit cards need to match your license more than anything - so do them all together maybe).

Peace!

No your don't. But remember most accounts will want you to have the same name as on your ID. Drivers License.

So if you don't chance it one place consider not change it everywhere. Thing that you and your husband will own together can still have your maiden name on it but in the event of a divorce I am not sure what the ramifications would be.

When you get married you can choose to keep your maiden name if you want and your husband to be agrees to it! But if you take your husbands last name you should change it on accounts like bank accounts, dr. offices and things like that. Mail that you get everyday like magazines and other things you shouldn't have to worry about. You do need to get a new social security card with your married name and a new drivers license for proof of identification though. Good luck with married life!

That will be up to you and what your new husband has decided to do. Even though you don't change them won't matter when it comes to some things, like credit cards or whatever. Your SSN number drives most all the information when it comes to credit. What you are suppose to do on a legal basis is change your SSN card and you driver's license to the correct name so it won't be any problems. It could also cause problems with your tax filings if you file married filing joint.

Really it's up to you on how much you want to change. Ex: If you don't change your SS# then you file your taxes married but with your maiden name and not your married name. But no you don't have to change it if you dont want to.

No. You don't have to change your name at all unless you want to. You can choose to keep your maiden name.

It does make it easier to change every account if you do choose to change your name, though. Less confusing.

no. you do not have to change your name first of all. second if you change your name on one account..its best to change them on all accounts or things will start to become confusing. this affects everything that your name is attached to. all legal matters. (which is y i never changed my name when i got married but that's just me)

If you are changing your name on one thing then you have to on everything. You don't have to change your name at all though if you don't want to.

You do not have to but whatever is on your driver's license is probably the name you need to use for idenification purposes. Or you could always keep your name - you have had it your whole life or even hyphenate it.
