I used to manage a tanning salon.
If the beds you use have face tanners, you can usually turn them off. If you can't, then just flip around and put your feet under them. Many people even put a small towel over their face.
You ABSOLUTELY can use a face lotion with SPF in a tanning bed. But if it contains any petroleum products or oil, be careful not to get any on the acrylic of the bed-- it can damage the acrylic, making it foggy-looking and causing rough spots (which gets very costly).
They even make lotions for the face and body with SPF specifically formulated for tanning beds.
PS- If you have a tattoo, tanning can cause the color to fade. Rub some Chap-Stick on it- works like a charm!

It's different based on where you go. This is what usually happens: You go in and give them your information. They might have you fill out a consent form saying you understand the dangers of tanning and all that. The person working will decide how long you go in for. This all depends on the intensity of the bed you use. It could be as little as three minutes. Given that this is your first time tanning, you won't be in the bed for very long because you will burn. Also, they might try and sell you some kind of tanning enhancement lotions. You don't really need them, but it's up to you. Since it's your first time, the person working will probably take you back to the bed and show you how everything works. After they leave them room you'll undress and get in the bed. Usually there's some sort of button you press to start the process. Or, I've also been to a few places where they give you a certain amount of time before the bed starts automatically. It all depends on the salon. Then you just lay there (or sometimes stand) and relax for a few minutes. There's usually music playing to help it go faster. And a fan to keep you cool. When the bed turns off you just get up, get dressed, and leave. Some places have a cleaning solution and paper towels and ask that you wipe down the bed before you leave. So make sure to do that if you see them there. I've worn make up tanning before and it's been fine. Also, you won't be locked in the bed or anything, you can open it up while you're in there, but I wouldn't advise it because it could make you tan less even. Be aware though, this is your first time so you may burn a little. But it should only last a day, the next time you go back you'll probably start to tan. Good luck!

Good grief, stay out of those tanning beds. Even with the SPF you will fry like a french fry. It is a sure way to get skin like leather, early wrinkles, age spots, and it can even lead to skin cancer. Use a self tanning lotion or spray instead.

Even though you go to the salong to obtain a quick tan, you should still use sunscreen... especially on the face!!!

Its okay, but if kind of defeats the purpose. Can't you just tan for a shorter amount of time?
