Every year interior designers get a list of discontinued carpet by the manufactuers. Sometimes there are rolls, sometimes remnants. You can look at outlets in your area because they buy up the lots of what is left. Also, if you have a re-use it center in your area, often you can find carpet in perfectly good conditon that was replaced by another flooring option. You might try freecycle or craigslist as well. Often installers that took out carpet or countertops in good condition unload their "finds" there rather than paying the dump fees.

I live in MA and we got a place called scratch and dent. I bought a perfectly good vanity there and they had tons of countertops that were cut wrong. We also have a place called Building 19 which sells imperfect stuff. May be there is one of these near you.

check internet for carpet mills, they will list many and you can buy direct They will sometimes send samples. I use ebay for the granite counter top suppliers. Check under granite countertops and there are several that are less expensive even with shipping and will ship nationwide. Especially if you have a typical sized kitchen. You will be surprised.

You can do yourself AND someone else a favor by shopping at your local Habitat for Humanity Retail Store. They accept scratch & dent items, project overages or just replaced items from builders, retailers and the general public and sell it in their store to benefit your local Habitat for Humanity group. The items are generally priced way below retail and you may have to dig through a pile or two out back but the odds are - you'll find something you just can't live without. These are great places to shop for a bargain.

If you want used - a garage sale is the best place to visit. But if you want brand new - try the manufacturers themselves. Some actually hold sales for slightly damaged or rejected items they can't sell but can't throw away either. If there's none near you, you can email them or give them a call.

pretty much any store that sells that stuff will have discontinued or imperfect ones. usually stuff like display models or extra merchandise or stuff like that. check around the smaller home decor stores. big ones like home depot and lowes will have them too but don't know if it'll be worth the price.
