It's not just fish that tails have... Tails also have cats, dogs, horses, lions, tigers, bears.... oh my. This could get way out of hand. All these things need rudders to keep balance.

Hmmm? What about snakes? Where does the tail end and the snake begin?

The tail has a fish because it is a fish's tail, and tails need food and oxygen that the cannot get on their own without something known as a "Head" and a "Body." Fish provide a head and body to the tail, and use gills, and a digestive tract to give the tail food and oxygen. The tail in return lets the fish swim around, and actually reach the food.

Also, the tail would look really gross just swimming around in the aquarium all by itself, it wouldn't know where it was going, and at some point, it would probably flip out of the water, land on your girlfriend, and bleed everwhere until she called the police. Please don't try to raise tails without the animals they come on.
