To be successful you have to have ego. Donald Trump once said "Show me someone without an ego and i'll show you a loser".
When you have an big ego, you won't be grateful. When you not happy with what you have, you won't be happy. But when you want more, you do what it takes to get more. Even if your not happy, you will be geting more material success.

If this is true, then what is the use of working so hard in life when we can just lay back and enjoy life?

It depends on what each individual defines as success. Some think success is being number one in business or whatever field and they work hard at getting there, thus get an ego boost when they do outdo all others. If they are the best this makes them happy. Unfortunately too many people think that success is having more material items and they think by having more material items they will be happy. If they are smart they will see that things don't bring true happiness, they wear out, get old, disintegrate, must be replaced. When I know I have been successful at something, whether a project nicely done, a good grade on a test, receive compliments on what I do, it makes me feel happy.

Success and and happiness are not mutually exclusive. An inverse relationship does not exist between the two. Success is measured by others, where happiness is an internal measurement, each person deriving his meaning for happiness. Finding meaning in life makes a person happy, especially where one can participate in his life's meaning. If your life philosophy states serving others is the meaning of life, then you could easily achieve recognition from others for this service. Billy Graham is very successful in winning others to Jesus Christ, but He finds happiness in serving the Lord.

What good is all the money in the world if you are unhappy.
Why work long hours for more money and success if you don't have time to spend it.
I've got a job that I enjoy, make average money, have hobbies and enjoy alot of time with my family,
I believe I'm successful because my loved ones are taken care of and I'm content. What more is there?
