The leader of the United States is referred to as President, not prime minister as the leader of Britan is called.

The President of the United States is controlled by the system of checks and balances, so if he does cross a line he shouldn't, he can be impeached.

The president is also referred to as the commander in chief, so he can advise military action, but congress checks to see if his moves are wise. In turn, The President can veto legislation he does not agree to.
