Eat wisely but not too well, means: 'eat wisely' - enjoy whatever you put on your plate 'but not too well' - but don't go back for third and fourth helpings, and don't sop up the gravy with the bread crusts! In other words, don't make a pig of ourself.
The eat wisely also refers to the fact that at a dinner party there are often extra courses -- appetizers, sorbets, cleansers, afters -- a full dinner party menu can run to around a dozen courses. So eating wisely means tasting but not heaping your plate with food, especially at the start of a meal, because there will possibly be several more courses coming up.

Always leave the table a little bit hungry. At a dinner party, everything you do is guaranteed to make an impression, and you want to be sure it's a good one. If you're provided silverware, by all means use it. You don't want to eat too much or too many rich foods because then you won't be focused on the conversation around you, and that's paramount if you want to get invited back.

It means you have to control your eating - don't gobble up food and just eat little by little, small bites, etc that sort of thing. Wisely meaning get only what you can finish. There are too many children going hungry in the world for you to waste food you can't finish. If its a buffet, don't over stuff your plate, you can always go back for seconds.

It was explained to me this way.
When you are invited out to eat or to a dinner party, eat before you go so as to take the sharp hungry pains away, and to be able to handle the alcohal if served and to be able to handle if the food is served late, or something you don't like. Eat lightly so as not to appear pigish, at a dinner party, leave food on the plate don't clean your plate, one reason more than one course maybe served. If you eat to much at one course you will not be able to eat the other courses and offend the hostess by not eating the rest.

I'm not sure- maybe that you don't go to a dinner party just to eat, but to join in social banter with others who may be scrutinizing what you say and do- so you should be mindful of what impression you are making? Eat beforehand, so you are not ravenously hungry, and don't make a pig of yourself or get drunk too fast?

Eat enough so as not to offend the cook, but not enough to make a pig of your self. Also If you eat too much you might get gas, or feel bad afterwards.

This is a very good tip.
Basically it means that you should eat enough so that your host is flattered and feels that you enjoyed your food, but not eat so much that they worry they did not provide enough food for you

I think it means that one should show their best manners, but not outdo the hosts. If the host is not as educated in a situation there is no reason to allow them to be embarrased by your finer abilities. Best wishes
