I'm planning on applying for an allotment, but am a complete novice. What top tips can you give me?

Only get a piece of land that you can manage as digging can be hard work.A good spade and fork and hoe are essential but if you can obtain or borrow a rotovator this will work the soil for you.I had an allotment that was close to where I lived but it was too big
and needed constant work to keep the weeds at bay. I now use
a small strip of land at the side of my house for potatoes and runner beans and grow strawberries and tomatoes in tubs and grow bag green houses and lettuce in a cold frame.

Burn the branches, but will still need to dig the roots out. Talk to the people who have the neighbouring allotments, and follow their advice.

Book a rotovator for the day you get the allotment...completely rotovate the plot,and start from new..its looks amazing when its finished and you can plan your own areas.Makes digging alot easier too....
