I just answered this guys question but I questioned whether he might be racist. He put an additional detail on his question saying "don't worry I'm not racist, I just think that racism is funny." Can you not be racist but think that racism is funny? Does that make sense to you?

What's funny about people hating other people?

2006-07-25 06:54:49 · update #1

I never thought about it as he could have meant racism is not ha ha funny but funny its stupid sense. However, the question of his I was responding to sounded like a racist joke. So, when he said funny I'm thinking he saying ha ha funny. I could be wrong and I apologize to him if I am. But, whether he meant it that way or not this is still a good question.

If you think a person being racist is funny (as in odd and crazy), that is one thing, if you think a racist remark is funny then that is being racist.
It's kind of like when someone begins a statement "I'm not racist, BUT....." You know they are getting ready to say something incredibly racist and somehow they justify it.

Yes, but it's a matter of "laughing with" or "laughing at". You laugh at racists because you know they are stupid. Since they are stupid, they think you are laughing with them.
When humor starts to make sense, it isn't very funny anymore. I like ethnic jokes where the person who is my color is the butt of the joke, because people of my color have been the worst racists in history. Racism is not really funny. It's sad. It's led to a lot of violence and hate and persecution and stuff that is still affecting the world today. I'd like to see racism go away and I think that talking about it helps it go away, but not as much as getting to know a diverse bunch of people. Most racists hate faceless people as a group, while they might be open to accepting someone as an individual. The question for me has always been how to avoid hating a (racist) person while rejecting some of their actions and points-of-view. I think this might be what you are talking about: talking to a human being, but not approving of all of their views. You understand some of the issue. Don't stop trying to understand and don't get caught up in someone else's hate game.

ALl you need to think racism is funny is a knowledge of the characteristics of a particular race and a good sense of humor. By the way, who on earth ever taught you that racism means hating other people? Racism can be positive also. If I say that all black guys could be in the NBA, that is clearly racist, but it is not hate-based. If I say that Asians are all good a math and computer technology, that is clearly racist, but it is not based on hate at all.

Racism isn't funny, it's not a joke. Though making fun of social observations is funny given the joke is good. Now stating that a mexican, or black person or jew or who ever is a (insert derogatory term here) is not funny. Racists are funny though. They crack me up with all their hate and all they really need is a hug from a thick bootied sista to set them straight! Maybe some time with a "latin" lover will turn their eyes right. Who knows. Ignorance breeds ignorance...

It can be humorous when people are being really stupid and making a big deal over nothing.

Here is a cool story for you. It's funny becuase the Racist gets burned! hehe.

WELL DONE, BRITISH AIRWAYS!

This scene took place on a BA flight between Johannesburg, South Africa and London, England.

A white woman, about 50 years old, was seated next to a black man. Obviously disturbed by this, she called the air hostess.

"You obviously do not see it then?" she responded. "You placed me next to a black man. I do not agree to sit next to someone from such a
repugnant group. Give me an alternative seat."

"Be calm please," the hostess replied. "Almost all the places on this flight are taken. I will go to see if another place is available."

The hostess went away and then came back a few minutes later. "Madam, just as I thought, there are no other available seats in the Economy Class. I spoke to the captain and he informed me that there is also no seat in the Business Class. All the same, we still have one place in the First
Class."

Before the woman could say anything, the hostess continued. "It is not usual for our company to permit someone from the Economy Class to sit in the First Class. However, given the circumstances, the captain feels that it would be scandalous to make someone sit next to someone sooooo disgusting."

She turned to the black gentleman, and said, "Therefore, Sir, if you would like to, please collect your hand luggage, a seat awaits you in First
Class."

At that moment, the other passengers, who'd been shocked by what they had just witnessed, stood up and applauded.

This is a true story.

Have you seen the movie Guess Who, in that they have a whole seen sort of laughing at racist jokes. Sometimes the jokes can be funny to any number of races but it is the hate that isn't funny. It is like jokes about blonds or fat people, it is about generalities, and making fun of steriotypes can be funny, even if they aren't always or even often true.

Racism is funny - funny strange not funny ha ha.

Isn't it funny how people are afraid of someone who is exactly the same as they are in everyway except for the colour of their skin...isn't just laffable?

It's all in how you've worded the question.

No. If you think racism is funny (ha ha) then you are a racist. If you think racism is funny (odd, unusual) then that's a different story.

There is nothing funny about people hating other people because of their race. It can be funny when a person makes fun of their own race. Carlos Mencia does alot of semi-racist jokes about stereotypes.
