Pretty much the same the dark age didn´t stop knowledge to grow and accumulate, but stopped common people from getting access to it, right now we spent years and years studying and catching up with all the knowledge that´s been collected so far our capacity to develop new things s undermined only for the time we take to learn what has already been done, during industrial revolution and all the way trough the middle of the last century scientific advance was a step behind application it is up to the last 60 to 70 years that engineering started to depend on science to grow and no viceversa

The Dark Ages were not a period of inactivity in the scientific community as the name implies. Rather, there was much work done in the way of scientific research, especially by the clergy in the Catholic church. The mindset of a scientist in the Middle Ages was one of desire to know the workings of God. I could go on, but I will refer you to an example text written by Marshall Clagett entitled, "The Science of Mechanics in the Middle Ages." This text should reveal to you the advancements made by many little known researchers in this period of economic, not scientific, privation.

The Romans were great engineers but their understanding of basic science was not as good. They also had no 0 in in their numbering system.

And there totalitarian empire was sadistic and brutal.

Maybe the middle ages was necessary to mix things up and allow Europeans to adopt Arabic numerals (they had a zero) and to allow a period like the Renaissance to happen.

In many ways I would hate to see a 21st century Roman Empire. Imagine the carnage in coliseum with the types of weapons we have now!!

The dark ages were disappointing because the Romans left leaving us with farming and hunting as the daily routine once more.

The 'Dark Ages' were only in Europe. China and India, for example, did not experience it. yet they don't seem to be changed for lack of it. They didn't explore the world, or colonize the americas, or go to the moon...

So not much diff is my guess.
