Bible. Lots of little stories to read. Can start at the front, end or inbetween. Has love, murder, sex, war, recipes, advice, geography, history, miracles, philosophy, culture, spirituality. There's something for everybody and every mood. Besides it's the one thing you can read that 9 out of 10 people will have an opinion about! So atleast you'll feel relevant!

It would depend on what interests you normally. If you like fantasy, the Harry Potter series is good, also the Septmus Heap series. If you like a bit of a thriller and suspense, the Dan Brown books are good to read. With games and computers these days, people forget books still exist, and trust me, I would rather curl up with a good book than my computer any day of the week.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Says a lot about being a good parent and neighbour and seeing the value in others. It is often the only book that people read before they leave school and it the only one they really need to if reading does not appeal to their lives.

Whatever happened to liking books for their literary merit? Most of the books answered here are junk. Truly. A great book is like a very expensive meal in a restaurant. Most of the books included here are like a packet of Twisties.
Somebody sure is pleased with To Kill A Mockingbird. That is a great book, that is not Twisties.
And please, can all you religious people go and proselytize SOMEWHERE ELSE! I am so sick of seeing the Bible offered as if it were a decent answer to a question. We're looking for great literature here, not more religion.

A great book is: The Hawkline Monster by Richard Brautigan.

Here are a few:

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas (read the abridged version)
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom

Expose yourself to different genres and different authors. You will be opened to new worlds and new ways of thinking. If you limit yourself to one author, you cheat yourself out of all of the incredible minds out there.

My husband is the same way. In the years that we have been married, I have gotten him to read only three books... all which he enjoyed. They may not be your style, but here are the three...

"A Child Called It" by Dave Pelzer
"The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams which btw, is much better than the movie.
"The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown
