get tropical fish, not goldfish! goldfish are the dirtiest tank fish you could buy, and so they require more frequent water changes, among other things.
when you go to your local pet store, see if any of the tanks are marked by tags that say: "school fish, community fish, semi-agressive, etc." if you're going to have a bunch of different kinds, get the ones that are community fish, meaning they can live well with other fish. the schooling fish (like neons and other really small ones) need to be in multiples, since they feel safer and aren't very agressive during feeding time if there's just 1 or 2. the semi-agressive ones are of course, somewhat agressive and can attack the other fish. if the fish aren't marked, i'm sure someone there will know.
also, try to get fish that are all around the same size. bigger fish eat smaller fish EVERY TIME, no matter what.
good luck!

Figure out if you want a community tank, where all the fish will more or less get along, or an aggressive tank, which means you will have fewer fish and they will eat anything that is smaller than them. I have a community tank, and I find that gourmai's are very colorful and get along great together. Add some zebra danno's to create a school of fish (get at least 4), an algae eater, a catfish to clean the bottom and your set. Keep in mind, they recommend 1 inch of fish for every gallon of water. So a 10 gallon tank, you can have enough fish, lined head to tail, they would measure 10 inches. Also, you only want to put a max of 4 fish in the tank at a time. The excrete ammonia when stressed, and too many fish makes the water go bad and they can all die. So get 4 fish, wait 4 or 5 days, then add 4 more and so on and so forth. Have fun

Guppies are pretty, Gold fish are VERY pretty and they have many diff kinds. Mollies, Sword tail fish, angel fish are nice, but are VERY territorial, Not sure if you know, But if you do get beta's you can only have one in each tank, they will kill eachother. Good luck, Go to the pet store, they will show you which kind of fish go well together.

you can go to your local pet store and take a look through the fish. write down a coupe names that you like of fish, and go home and google them! make sure you do a good ammount of research, and find a fish that will be relitivaly easy to take care of! go back to the petstore and buy it--taht way, you'll have one that's perfect for you!
i'm partial to koi fish and catfish, but those always need huge tanks! if you're looking for something decent sized though, i'd recomment those. they're non-aggressive (go well with smaller fish!), and always brighten up any room!
if you want a lot of small fish though--pladdys are small fish that come in yellow, white, and orange, and breed like bunnies!
basically, you can't ask someone else to tell you what you want. there's tons of resources not only online, but at any family owned petstore! again, you can go in and take a look, but you also may want to ask them if they have anything you'd want!
good luck!

Guppies are easy to take care of. AND make sure you get an algae eater and SOME type of bottom feeder (I call these "housecleaning fish"). They will cut down DRAMATICALLY on your tank cleaning.
Ask at your local pet store. They can help you to choose fish which are compatible.
