The caged bird sings because it's so happy that it has an air conditioned home and is being well taken care of with food, love and medical care if it gets a little sick.

It has a song to sing to all that listens.

To be heard. They are social animals and as such crave the contact of other birds and even learn to want contact with people. The caged bird sings to attract others.

I would suggest reading Viktor Frankl's "Man's search for meaning".

Viktor Frankl was a psychologist who survived the Holocaust, and based his therapy afterwards on the fact that most of the people that survived were those who held on to a vision of a free future, or held some meaning in their lives even in the face of extreme and horrible suffering.

Even though it has had limits placed on its' freedom, it can still create and find beauty in its' limited world. Kind of like people in cubicles still sing to the radio....
