The main difference is that ancient algebra didn't use symbols the way we do. Rather than write (8/7)x = 59, the ancient Egyptians, for instance, would write "The number plus its own seventh comes to 59."
Of course, they'd write it in Egyptian. But you get the idea.
Whether you use symbols or not, algebra is still the process of *numeric deduction* -- given certain facts about an unknown quantity, and certain properties of numbers as a whole, can we deduce the value of the quantity?
There's a good primer on the history of algebra in the Wikipedia algebra article, which I've linked below. You might start your research there (although be careful to use other sources -- a lot of teachers won't accept Wikipedia as a source).
Hope that helps!

There is little difference between the mechanics of ancient and modern algebra. Only the common symbols used have changed, and modern algebra can be extremely complex.
In 820AD, a Persian mathematician wrote a very extensive book on algebra. You might want to check it out in the link below. Notice that al-Jabr is very close to the modern English word algebra.

Ancient algebra was more reliable and exact. Mathematicians back then were 'real' unlike all the 'fake' ones we have around today. This is probably the main difference.
McClean: Chill out!! I wonder how you would react to the new English language grammar being proposed for use in the USA? You spell the words exactly as you hear or say them:
Soe, wat do yoo think of thet?

India became the richest in historic international in words of custom, faith information, intentions and discoveries. Like my pal stated above "China inherited Buddhism and their nicely nicely-known martial arts from India " this itself implies India turned right into a more effective constructive China.
