Most modern Mexicans are mestizo, a mixture of indiginous and Spaniard (and possibly other ethnicities).
Before the Spanish arrived in Mexico, the Aztecs had control of a large portion of the area. The Aztecs were Meso-American indians. There were, however, other tribes in the region and the Aztecs themselves decended from other Mesoamericans.
The origins of mesoamericans is often debated and most likely somewhat mixed. Some of their ancestors most likely came across from northern Asia by the Barring land bridge (land that used to bridge Alaska with Russia) or by water from the same place, and were of the same people the Native Americans in the US and Canada decend from. Some may have south east Asian roots, and decend from the same people that the modern day polynesians did.

I'm Mexican. You need to understand that the term 'Hispanic' includes many different ethnic varieties. Some Hispanics are fully Spanish, and these people are also considered to be 'White', since they're fully European. Other Hispanics are part Spanish and part South American Indian (Aztec, Incan, Mayan, etc.) - this is the most common ethnic blend for most Hispanics living in America. Some Hispanics are even part 'Black', in that some of their ancestry is African. Most Mexicans are a blend of Spanish and Aztec, which is probably what I am. My husband is white (German, English, and Irish), so our daughter is very ethnically diverse.
Of course, we're all AMERICAN, which is what really matter.

Just as the term Americans encompasses a wide variety of people and mixes of cultures so does the term Mexican----There are many cultures of peoples in the Mexican mix and pinning that down to one or two would be totally off base---stronger influences have been from the native peoples of so called Indian descent and the Spanish peoples that settled the area in such numbers early in recent history ----but there are noticable mixes of many European and Asian cultures as well and not to give credence to this fact is to deny the truth of the matter

They are Native American because the indigenous people of that area had been there for thousands of years. Some Mexicans are considered to be "Native Americans" in their own country. Just like in the United States, you can sometimes tell when a person is of native descent.

The 'original' Mexicans (pre-Spanish people) were Inca and Aztec Indians. They were a race of very intelligent people, and it's hard to understand how a few hundred Spaniards managed to overcome them. Even re-reading the history books, it makes no sense, but then, so much of history is illogical anyway.

"Does it really matter? When do we stop caring about the past and realize that we are all one blood today!"
*rolling eyes* geez! can you say pantload? We're NOT one blood by any stretch of the imagination. It scares me when anyone can make something up that makes them feel good, and spout it off as truth. What's worse are those that believe them because it sounds good, or makes them feel good too....*rant off* anyhow...
They are a mix....Aztec/Mayan/American Indian/Spanish.
