had the same problem with my friend's new pc right out of the factory from dell. Bad motherboard. but if your was working before try this.
go to start>settings> control panel
System>system properties>hardware tap>device manager
see if you see any question marks that in is mulity media devices. if yes then you need to reinstall the sound card drivers. if not then click action and scan for new hardware if nothing found its most likely your sound card go dead with dell its normally connected to the motherboard so you have a bad motherboard.

Your soundcard drivers may just be corrupt. Go into the Device Manager (Right Click My Computer -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager button) and look under the 'Sound, video and game controllers' section to see if your card has a yellow asterix next to it. If it does double click it and see what the status says.

Same thing just happened to me the other day. Go online and find where ever your computer is made. Mine is an IBM so I went to IBM.com So go to whichever website and look for troubleshooting. I had to re-download the drivers. There is a virus out there that is doing this to computers. But downloading and re-installing the drivers should do the trick.

Reinstall the sound card drivers. I don't know how Dell does this anymore, if you have some driver restore CDs, run them. If not then you will have to download the driver from the manufacturer, Dell should have an online repository of drivers so just look up your model and you should find them here, http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

first, reboot.
second, if that does not work, go to windows updater and see if you need to install drivers,
thrid, go to my devices in the control panel and see if your audio device is listed,
fourth, open up pc and make sure sound card is pushed in properly

You may need to install software for this device. Or you can go to my computer-rightclick-properity--hardware---device amnager to see what the sound card works.

Restart your computer and see if it is still a problem. This has happened to me before, many times, and a simple restart straightened it out.

reinstall your audio drivers (removing them first)
if that doesn't work, swap you sound card or mother board, if it's integrated.
