I know it sounds like a morbid question but I just had a friend that died this past Sat (funeral is tommorow) and she wants to be cremated and I have found myself wondering these questions. I too, want to be cremated. Anyone know details on this topic?

It all depends on weight my dear and mass of the person.
How long does it take to cremate a body?
My mom was very heavy pre cremation about 200 lbs. and less than 5 foot 5...
Her remains could fill two large coffee cans approx.
Where as my cat who was 40 lbs filled about a 6 oz jar.

Cremating at the optimum temperature (1600 - 1800 degrees), the average weighted remains takes 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Several more hours may be required before the cremated remains are available to the family.

It is not morbid, society is just not acceptable of death and questions relating to it.
I am not.

Sorry about your friend. THE SPIRIT LIVES ON.
The reaper is an idiot! Does not know a darn thing about cremation! HE probably is a fake reaper! Not a Grim Reaper

My husband was cremated and it took several days to get his ashes back. Since I was pretty much in a fog at the time, I don't remember exactly how many days. I was surprised at how heavy the ashes were, but I could pick them up. No, I didn't weigh them, but I was surprised. I imagine your friend weighed less than my husband (who was 175 lbs). I just read some of the other answers and, I'll say again, the ashes do have weight to them. Obviously, the size of the person cremated is a factor.

This seems to be the choice of a lot of people now-a-days,cremation.And it seems that the decision is often-times based on financial considerations, rather than the knowledge of the relation of the soul to the body after it's examination and return back to the body for it's preparation for removal from the surface of the earth. And the choice also has been influenced by many Hindu practices that are very prevail ant in and around the country.A famous man once was reported as saying;"Be careful how you handle the dead, for if you break the arm of the dead,it's as if you broke the arm of the living, they feel it!" So if one is inclined to accept this as truth, then the next question is,"what about the one who is cremated?"

cremation takes pretty much all day. you're burning a wooden box and human remains. so it takes awhile. once done, all that's left is bones and ashes. the bones are further crushed in a tumbler making them more smaller and finer. the ash and crushed bone are then swept into the urn and weigh next to nothing really. about 4-5 pounds maybe

Cremation is fairly quick. It usually can be done in a matter of hours. The remains are surprisingly light.

I know that the ashes only weigh a few pounds afterwards. As to how long it takes I am uncertain...

The ashes are a little heavy, but not too bad. We have my father in laws and they have weight to them.
