A rocking chair was best gift I ever got lol. Not only did it make my son go to sleep when he was fussy, but I wasn't hurting from hours of walking and holding him.

As a mother of two, some of my favorite and well-used baby gifts I got were
- package of diapers (not newborn size, but one bigger)
- pyjamas or a sleeper/ outfit that is sized for 12 months/20lbs (most people seem to give a lot of newborn clothes as gifts that only last a month or so - it's great to look in your drawer when your baby is out growing stuff like crazy, and find you don't have to buy new clothes just yet!)
- a book that is made of cloth for baby to chew on while teething, and also to look at!

First, congrats. Second, you should get a gift for the mother - like pretty bath soaps, lotions, or oil. She deserves a big gift for all that she's been through.
Also a good gift for any baby are simple things like more onsies or bibs. But if you want something that he'll have as a keepsake/memento, maybe a silver rattle engraved with his name and date of birthdate. Obviously he won't play with it, but he can have it later in life.

I don't know what you are looking for, so here are some suggestions:
Common Sense: Diapers, wipes, shampoo, cream, etc. or clothes
Spiritual: A little boy Cross (look in bible type stores)
or a Dream Catcher - the native Indians believe it will catch and destroy the bad dreams and only allow the good ones.
Memories: Blanket embroidered with his name / weight, etc. Get one with 'boy' stuff on it so he can use it for years. A baby book so that Mom can record his growing up information.
Money: Savings Bonds, Savings Acct (start with min)

Try a savings bond. If you'd like something more instantly gratifying, gift certicates are always winners. And pampers. Not just pampers that fit right now but some for after the baby grows a little too.

Head to a bookstore with a children's section and pick out a few very basic books with big, simple pictures that the new mommy can read to your nephew. It's never too early to start reading to your baby!

Congratulations first of all ! Since the baby is a newborn, he really can't appreciate much. You should think about a gift that will help his parents care for him, better. Maybe a newborn swing, or even better something musical that can help soothe him.
<3 Go for it Auntie

In that case you need a good gift for the parents, cause the baby is so small it wouldn't appreciate anything. Buy something that it would make it's mother life easier, ask what she needs that hasn't buy yet.

us savings bonds - not so exciting now, but if you give him a savings bond for birthdays, holidays, etc for the next 18 years then he'll either be able to buy a nice car or have a good bit of his education paid for. My best friend paid 3/4 of her private university education with bonds she was given by a godmother. You bet she was grateful and can always remember what gm gave her for her birthday!
