Star Wars (Episode 4 - the oldest one). No other sci-fi movie has come close to its impact to so many viewers, and over so many years.

If I had to? Serenity. It's a 2005 film based on a 2002 TV series entitled "Firefly". If you haven't seen it, you should! It's almost like a western in the way that most of the characters talk and looks like one sometimes depending upon the planet that they're on. It's about a group of people on a ship called Serenity, named for a battle that the captain is a veteran of. Among them are two fugitives from the government organization.
It combines a ton of movies in different but pleasing ways; all in all, makes for a very fun and spectacular movie! The special effects are amazing and the actors couldn't be better. It's the only other sci-fi film besides Star Wars Episode III that I had to go see twice while it was still in theaters. I'd definitely bet my life on it.

Not sure what you mean by "bet your life on" but for me, the best sci-fi film ever made is Aliens.

I must say that I would not bet my life on anything - especially Science Fiction movies, since I have not seen many and the only one I can remember is "A Wrinkle In Time"!

A lot of people would say Blade Runner. I haven't seen that one, so I'll have to go with... hmm... oh, man, it's a toss-up between 2001: A Space Odyssey and Logan's Run.
