To survive out of school one needs to be able to communicate. Writing essays in high school is one of the most common tools used to teach and develop communication skills. When writing essays one needs to keep in mind audience, organization, logic of arguments, and the main idea. It may seem pointless to write essays, and if that is the case, then you and/or your teacher are not assigning the correct types of essays. Think about the cover letter you have to write to get a job or the argument you have to build for your boss so you can get a raise...now do you remember writing persuasive and informational essays in high school? Everything is connected, and there is a method to the madness.

Writing is how the world changes. Writing is the reason for your first ammendment. Writing essays allows people to state their informed and organised opinions on the state of the world, the culture they live in, or the culture they're fascinated by.
It's important to be able to form your thoughts into cohesive, well-rounded sentences because people will be much more likely to pay attention to you. And it's important to research so that your opinion doesn't end up sounding ignorant.
Writing an essay can be a big joy, as well as a pain in the ***. All you have to do is write about something that matters to you. If you're not getting that opportunity in high school, wait until university. Your options are much more open there.

writing an effective essay requires that some thought and organization go into the process. how does one grade the thought process and organizational skills of 100 students per semester without the essay?

Because you have to write really long ones in college. And if you are just downloading them, what's the point? You can't download an oil projection for a new region (or some other mundane thing) when you grow up and get a job.

Lots of great answers here--exactly! Good thinking=good writing. Note to mlb0328: While you may have gotten through your college career plagiarizing, I wouldn't advocate to those coming along that they, too, can get away with it. Our high school AND our local college use Turnitin.com to scan for plagiarism, and I know that other colleges and universities do as well. Should a student be found plagiarizing, he can be legally kicked out of college. Readers beware!

Because it is important to be able to gather your thoughts, organize them, think about them, and learn to present them to others effectively. Apart from the practical benefits (for example, being able to get a better job), it is also important because you are the only person capable of expressing your ideas, and without the ability to express them well, you will not be able to share them with others.
