Probably because that's how they WERE viewed at some point. Has no one ever heard of World War II??? I just watched an episode of "Cold Case" where a young jewish man and his family were hiding their Jewish faith back in the 50's just to be a part of a higher society. Needless to say... things have changed considerably for most minorities in America since then.
