We're getting a 25,000 BTU ac, but it requires 220v. I don't want to re-wire the whole house. Can this be done?

I don't think you have to re-wire the whole house. Did someone tell you this. At least in Jacksonville, FL. I believe that the cities incoming lines are 220v at the breaker box, it is then split to 110v for you standard appliance. So I believe you should just be able to install a 220v circuit at your breaker box and run just the wiring for your AC. I think.

You must have a licensed electrician create a new circuit to run 220 to the outlet at the A/C unit. No need for whole house wiring.

There are 110 volt A/C units, you may want to look at that.

Don't play around with, or let an amateur run this circuit. Electricity is best left to a professional.

If your house was built after 1955 or so, it almost certainly has 240V wiring. Although individual outlets deliver only 120V, the main circuit breaker panel will almost certainly have a 240V feed. If your house was built after the mid-1960s, it's just about a dead certainty that you have a 240V feed coming into the house.

If your house has overhead wires feeding it, look at the wires. Are there three separate wires or just two? If you have three separate wires, your house has a 240V feed.

If you do have a 240V service, any competent electrician can wire up an outlet for the A/C unit. Stay cool!

add a seperate breaker box from youre main
you wont have to rewire the whole house but you will have to run a wire suitable for a 220 connection from the main to the location of youre unit
