The reason that they are so cumbersome is because in the race to streamline design and have the next hot thing designers have forgotten the basics such as comfort and practicality.

interestingly enough though, after the london 7/7 bombings, those people who had been in the train and in the stations, but had ipods/earphones in, had 90% less chance of getting hearing damage from the explosion.
as long as you haven't already damaged your hearing from the music to begin with.
i have a sony mp3 player and they're a perfect fit, but maybe i just have bat-like ears :)

prob the original designers of earphones only had the capability to think of how to make earphones stay in the ear, regardless of comfort. i believe its a feat to begin with.. so when it has become universally accepted, its hard to change. and production cost for original designs are prob cheaper. so those earphones that come with it are still using the super old design could probably be there to create a market for those new comfortable designs.
new comfortable design are those ear canal earphones many major brands have. like sony , panasonic etc etc.... u can invest in one.... they are 'anti environment' to seal out noise, so you hear only pure music... i use it, and refuse to change back to any other cheaper ones ever since i first tried one...

I bought a Philips mp3 player and was pleased to find that the earbuds came with three different-sized rubber pieces. I used the smallest one and voila! No pain, no falling out of my ear canals.
As to why earbuds are made for non-human ears...I have no clue! I'm just glad to know that I'm not the only one with small ear canals!

Have you thought about maybe dropping $10 for a pair that do fit?
The earbuds that came with your eyepod were made by someone who worked for earpod. Since earpods are very large I doubt if any humans could get a comfortable fit. I had the same problem with my foot pods too.

Lift the top of your ear to open the ear canal and then put it earpiece in. Let go of your ear and the bud will stay. Repeat on other ear. This trick works wonders for me.

everyone i know with an ipod complains about the earphones being too big. if you use them for any extended period of time you end up with sore ears because of the size of them.
they are just too big!

I recommend Shure earphones, I have the E2Cs and they rock. Expensive, but well worth it if you take your sounds seriously.

Most pairs of headphones I have used are ok, but I hate the ones you get with Sony Ericsson Walkman phones, they are so uncomfortable.
