Its the old saying, the great established truths of today began as heresies. The first person to say the world was round was probably called a satan possessed fool, or worse. Pasteur discovered microbes and was denounced as un-Godly. Whatever is new or different is often seen as a threat. Just think of the emotional connotations of the word "alien"--totally negative and frightening. The Unknown is responded to that way, I think, out of a biological response, a default to a safe, familiar mode to keep a being out of trouble, yet advances can only be made on the fringes, by definition, and it takes special, rare individuals to do that.

After the talented person dies, we feel safe to show them respect, but while they live, we can't stand thinking of them as good. No one hates me very much yet, so I'm not talented. Yay!
