It depends on the penny. I presume that you refer to the US one-cent piece. Since 1982, the one-cent piece has a mass of 2.5 g, about a tenth of an ounce. This was when the U.S. Mint started making the coin primarily of zinc with just a copper coating. Before 1982, when the penny was mostly copper, it had a mass of 3.04 g, about 17% heavier. Both types are still in circulation, and 1982 contains pennies of both types.
