I'll bet any one of you would gladly become a slave to keep from starving, the most painful way to die, right?

Ouch, what makes you think I am good to eat?

What you fail to or refuse to realize is that not all slaves lived in pain and suffering. Many slaves refused to leave their homes with their masters when freedom came because they were treated so well by their slavemaster. Many were educated and given a chance to excell where that would have been an impossibility in the jungle.

There are many ways of dying that are far worse than starvation. Dying without personal integrity, without honour, and without self-respect is much worse. Dying gripped by a sense of powerlessness, a sense of personal inadequacy, and a need to kick those who do not have the advantages we are unwilling to take would be far worse than starvation. Dying with a heart filled with hatred and a mind clouded by ignorance would be much worse than starving to death. Dying with no hope of ever being respected or valued by one's community would be worse than starvation. Dying without ever taking a good look at yourself in the mirror and seeing yourself for what you are and your failure to postively change would be worse than starvation. Dying with the certain knowledge that everyone knows you as a pathetic bigot would be much worse than starvation. Is your integrity so cheaply purchased by a scrap of food as you would suggest of others?

Probably slavery will rescue me from an impending death, but what after that? What will I live for afterwards? I will languish under the oppression of my slavery and at every moment, pray to God to take me into his arms. At last, after many a hardship and after enduring much physical torture will I breathe my last. Is this how I would like to die? No. I'd more willingly die out of starvation being a free person rather than dying bit by bit in a cloud of despair.

No. I'd eat leaves, bark, and bugs if it came to that.
