It referrs to the person in your life that you are married or otherwise romantically committed to.
It is sometimes used sarcastically, but most times it is a term of endearment. expressing that you revere this person's happiness, life, experiences, etc., more than your own.

Simply put, when you're in a relationship there are things in your life..good, bad, indifferent, that make up your life's meaning, and when you find someone that you can depend up on to make all the above seem to be easier to endure, and that special someone make you feel complete, and you have a feeling inside that with them by your side you can conquer the world....then they are worthy of being your "better half" Good luck.

That you "love" your spouse _so_ much that you're willing to lie through your teeth to those around you and "admit" that they're your "better half"--better half of the marriage/relationship. It isn't ever true--neither half is better--it always takes two wings of the bird of humanity to fly.

in a relationship, many people feel that the person completes them or that they are "two parts of a whole being" and it is a compliment saying that they make you a better whole person.... or something like that, LOL
