What vaccines (shots, immunizations) do I need to be up to date on if I go to Caracas, Los Roques, Tucupita (in the Orinoco delta) and Melia in Venezuela?

I will be traveling there for one week in September. Also, what other meds do I need--malaria prevention?

Guess what, immunizations are germs! Why would you want them in your system? I do not get vaccinated and I travel to Africa very frequently. Your own body has a defense mechanism to protect itself. There are several horrific stories from side effects from shots.

Check with the CDC about any travel alerts/ restrictions.

www.cdc.gov

They have the most recent data. If you do see an alert for a vaccine - contact your local Health Department and they can direct you to which facilities/doctors are administering those vaccines.

And to the person who doesn't get vaccinated - it's people like you who spread preventable disease and why some diseases that should've been completely eradiated (like polio) have not been eradiated.

You are right to be concerned about your health while you are away from the USA. Please be sure to look into travel health insurance so that you will have coverage if something unexpected (and unpreventable) befalls you. Worldwide Health insurance is really good coverage from the industry leader. Go to http://www.wavehelp.com/travel-medical/index.htm and click through on the little red phone booth to learn more. If you wish, you can buy your coverage there on-line.
It sounds like a really interesting trip.
Best wishes.
