There are officially 193 recognized countries in the world. This does not include Taiwan, which is considered by most countries (including the U.S.) to be controlled by China.
Recently, the country of Serbia and Montenegro separated into two countries.
Every country except Vatican City is a member of the United Nations.

U.N. recognize 193 nations. They have 192 members and also recognize the Vatican City. This is about the number of nations in the world. You can never tell the exact number of countries, because there aren't any agreed upon number. E.g. China does not recognize Taiwan as a country, even though the U.S. (and many others) do.
