Do you still hurt because of your parents' divorce, even if it happened a long time ago?

the amount of pain greatly depends on how the parents handle the visitation , etc. My parents fought over me for years , who was going to have custody , who was going to pay for this or that, etc. they got divorced when i was nine months old, had they been mature and reasonable about things , it would have been fine! i'd have never known it any other way.

I think I hurt for a long time after my parents divorce. It has been well over 20 years ago now, and I finally feel better about it. I know the reason for the hurting before was that they still hadn't found someone that was good for them. Last year they both got married to two wonderful people, and I am just so happy to see how they finally are. It has been a lot of years of struggling in the love department for them. I now feel more content that they aren't together and that they have both really moved on with their lives for the better without each other. I think for the most part that children wish their parents were still together for the sake of being a family.

It's not the divorce that hurts, it's the fact of it being handled badly. Divorce can actually help a child in some situations. What hurts is not being visited by the absent parent, being inappropriately used as an emotional crutch and sounding board for the parent I lived with, and hearing ugly stories about my parents from each other.

My parents divorced when I was 5. I remember some things, but it doesn't hurt. But....my mother did use me to vent about my dad for a long time, and would put me on the phone when they were yelling. That was absolutely terrible. As long as parents act civil, then there should be no problems.

It happened 40 years ago, and I do not still hurt from it. I think there were times of revisiting the hurt over the years, awkward times like holidays, graduations, wedding, births of my children, but it wasn't like it was a constant hurt.

The pain will go on for the rest of the child's life.
