the good thing about using software to write a page is that it is quicker and less painful. but these programs use way too much coding and make your pages load slower. also they use general coding that works with only certain browsers and has kind of a generic look to them. these programs can only help you if you are using a computer with it installed. text editors are installed on every windows computer.
coding a page by hand gives you a lot more power. you can make the pages work in all browsers using cascading style sheets filters and hacks. you don't have to be using the computer that has one of those programs installed on it.
i write my pages by hand in windows wordpad in the text document mode. back when i started the programs that you used to write pages were extremely basic and not worth your time. so you either wrote them by hand or paid someone else to. i don't like paying so i taught myself by experimenting with it.

Hardcore handcoders say the Dreamweaver provides sloppy code, which is a little true, but it saves a lot of time and does good work. I do think though, before any web developer uses a WYSIWYG they must be able to build a simple webpage from scratch using notepad.
The newer Dreamweaver releases allows cleaner code design using PHP, APS, etc in the HTML code view so they have addressed the issue a little.
So really, there isn't any real disadvantage. It comes down to personal preference.

I'd say the disadvantage is you can't fully get into the customisation of your website. To know how to manually code gives you more freedom to make your website exactly as you want it. Dreamweaver and other programs might be good to build the initial HTML frame of your website, but it's best to learn HTML, PHP, CSS, etc, and to customise your site to do the things you want it to do (such as using scripts), or to be organised the way you want.

expert webdesigners use Dreamweaver. it extremely is the industry commonplace. There are some dinosaurs accessible who nevertheless code in basic terms in notepad, yet they seem to be a sluggish and scarcity of existence breed as their designs take lots of time. i exploit Dreamweaver 8 for all my designs and that i've got achieved paintings for Fortune 500 companies.
