I think it depends on a few things. If this has been a car that has been reliable, hasn't given you too many problems, and is used to being driven a lot, then I think it should be safe enough to drive on your road trip. A few things to keep in mind, however:
* In addition to your oil changes, start getting checkups and do regular maintainance NOW, if you don't already. Don't just do it before your trip. This will help guarantee that any small problems that may exist now won't turn into major problems later.
* Have a back up plan - Even a brand new car can break down on a trip. Join AAA so that you can take care of any problems that may occur during your trip. Have emergency money for a rental car or a bus ride home if necessary.
*Limit your driving to daylight hours - If your car breaks down, it will be easier for people to see you and help. Also, you'll have a better chance of businesses being open and it is safer.
*Take major highways and roads - Although the road less taken is more scenic, it's also the most remote and you'll have a hard time finding help when the nearest place is 20 miles away.
In general, be smart about this road trip. Just because people took trips in their old station wagons in the 60's doesn't mean they didn't run into problems either. Whatever you decide, good luck!

Rent a car, find a real cheap weekly rate and don't risk it. Your car is POS, I hate to tell you that but it is, these sold for around 6k back then.... YOu have many issues from transmission failing to overheating, ect. Be smart and drive that car locally but long trip no go.
Back in the old days cars in 60s were more reliable on the basic levels, my 69 olds had a 350 rocket engine with almost 300k and I drove it all over the country, it was simple and easy to maintain, your car is not one of the most reliable cars made at all.

Get a complete check-up before you leave. Get an oil change, have your brakes and transmission fluid checked and all of your other fluids topped off. Get the treads on your tires checked for wear. Make SURE you have a spare tire with you. Even better would be to have a full size tire with you in case you're too far away from somewhere to buy a new one if you bust one in the middle of nowhere. You'll probably be fine, just make sure you do all of these necessary preparations.

Nothing beats the illusionary freedom of the road. I would highly recommend picking 5 western states, the rest of the country is scenery challenged.
